Why being close is being wrong
Every other kind of search is allowed to be approximately right. Here the near-miss ships: the part goes on a lorry, arrives on a site, and is found to be wrong by the person holding a spanner. What that costs is not the item — it is the crew standing still and the question of who signed for the substitution.
What it made us build
What this industry made us build is the refusal. A matcher that returns its best guess is worthless where being close is being wrong, so the system stops instead: it names the attribute it is missing and asks the person who can answer. Every system we have built since routes what it will not decide, and that came from here.
