A desk head's first move with a price is to take it apart. A number that cannot be taken apart is not used twice, however good it is — so what gets built produces the derivation alongside the result, fast enough to hold up inside a live call with a counterparty.
What it made us build
What this industry made us build is the derivation. A desk refuses a number it cannot take apart, and that refusal became a rule for everything after it: every result carries what it stood on, in all three lines of work. It has a name now — Chain of Record — and it started at a trading desk.
